Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as the pleiades. It rises in mid winter, and for many maori it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki is made up of seven stars Ururangi, Tupua a rangi, Tupua a nuku, Waiti, Waita, Waipuna a rangi and Matariki.
This week to celebrate Matariki we had a hui with the children and asked them what they would like to have to eat at the feast this year.. Matariki is all about coming together as one, so we decided to invite our families/whanau to come and have a kai here with us. The Children decided that this year instead of having a hangi, they would like to have spaghetti bolognase and macaroni & cheese. What an awesome feast we had celebrating together.
